The 3-Word Challenge

When challenged to distill leadership into just three words, I landed on Clarity, Resilience, and Dependability. Here's why these words define what leadership means to me right now.

The 3-Word Challenge

Leadership is a spectrum.

We've all been asked to define it, but the truth is, leadership looks different depending on where you are in life, in your career, or even in your mindset. For some, it's operational: hitting numbers, managing teams, executing. For others, it's visionary: setting direction and inspiring people to follow. And for some, it's foundational: learning, failing, and rebuilding.

So when Dr. Tony Bridwell challenged (assigned) my Executive MBA Cohort to distill leadership into just three words, I struggled. Every word has weight. Every word could fit depending on context. That's the challenge—defining something as dynamic as leadership in static terms that's relevant to you! Now.

As a business owner (Harper Belmont), a student at SMU Cox School of Business, and actively pursuing multiple community engagement programs like Presidential Leadership Scholars & The Texas Lyceum, my three words that define what leadership means to me right now: Clarity. Resilience. Dependable.

Clarity

Clarity definition - the quality of being clear, coherent, and intelligible

This is an aspirational trait for me that I am constantly battling to apply.

You owe your team clarity. Clarity in vision, clarity in direction, and clarity in communication. There's that analogy about everyone rowing the boat in the same direction. But if your people don't even know what a boat is, or what oars do, you're not going anywhere.

Clarity is what aligns effort and energy. It defines not only where you're headed, but why you're going there and how you'll get there. Without it, you drift.

Resilience

Resilience definition - the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties

As a leader, especially an entrepreneur, you're constantly tested: financially, emotionally, mentally. You get hit with internal and external challenges every day.

As a small business owner, my main job is to stay alive. To Survive. Because in entrepreneurship, survival is step 1. Then some stuff happens in Step 2. then Step 3 = Profit.

Resilience illustration - person pushing through obstacles

Resilience is showing up day after day, seven days a week, even when no one sees it. It's answering emails at 4 a.m., sitting alone in the office at 2 a.m., and doing the work when motivation's gone. That kind of quiet resilience is the backbone of leadership.

For years I dismissed all those conference speakers preaching "mindset." I thought it was fluff. Show me tactics! But it turns out they were right, at least partly. Mindset is everything when you're in the trenches. It's the difference between staying stuck and staying alive. (to be clear, I still think most of those gurus are full of it!)

Dependable

Dependable definition - trustworthy and reliable

Dependability is the 'meat & potatoes' of leadership. It's showing up when you say you will. Following through. Being the person people can count on.

You could argue that dependability is part of resilience, but I see it as separate. Resilience is internal—it's how you keep yourself going. Dependability is external—it's how others experience your consistency.

Your team, your clients, your partners—they trust you not because you're perfect, but because you're predictable. You do what you say you'll do. In an era of noise, burnout, and "AI Slop," dependability is currency. It builds credibility faster than any marketing campaign ever could.
